About Therapeutic Riding
The positive physical and emotional effects of riding first caught the attention of European physicians and therapists during the polio epidemics in the early 1950s. Individuals with impaired mobility benefited by the rhythmic motion of horseback riding which moved their bodies in a manner similar to the human walking gait. In time, the benefits to individuals with learning or mental disabilities were recognized as riders displayed increased concentration, patience and discipline while learning to ride. It was also discovered the unique relationships formed between horse and rider helped improve interpersonal relationships for those affected by psychological or emotional disabilities. In 1969 the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association was founded and therapeutic riding centers sprang up throughout the United States.
About Critter Creek
At Critter Creek equine activities are used to achieve therapeutic and educational goals for children and adults with physical, mental and psychological impairments. We focus on goals such as improved balance and posture; increased muscle strength, control and flexibility; and increased communication skills. In addition, our program encourages self-esteem. We strive to provide a quiet, caring atmosphere where students and volunteers can feel good about their accomplishments and can learn from their mistakes.
